Oaxaca, Oaxaca

Because the city and the state have the same name, people say "Oaxaca, Oaxaca" when refering to the city. We stayed  for 2 nights in a great hotel a bit outside of the center, near the Santo Domingo Cathedral.

Rooftop terrace of the hotel

The "continental" breakfast of 2 pieces of toast and coffee was a bit lacking.

Lovely hand made rugs in Teotitlan del Valle - those on the right are made with natural dyes

We learned a lot about how the natural dyes are made - mostly indigo and cochineal - are very labor intensive and thus much more expensive

We bought a small rug dyed with nuez and granite (black walnut and pomegranite seeds). Here, the weaver is tying off the ends of our rug. This family spoke mostly Zapotec which was interesting to hear.

TD's delicious enchiladas verdes

I had an excellent bowl of tortilla soup. Too bad I didn't get any pictures of the moles that we ate. Yum!!

The beautiful Templo Santo Domingo de Guzman

There was a great artists' collective making prints on the square. We bought a couple prints and a paper mache skull

Here is Tom's print getting made!

  1. Sus this is SO cool! I can't wait to see all your treasures. I love that TD rocked his Chuy's shirt in Oaxaca, he looks very legit.
    Love you!
